GAZETTEER OF KNOWN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES & LISTED BUILDINGS
Anglo Norman to Medieval Period (1066- 1490); (Objects within a 2000m radius)
A gazetteer is used by historians, geographers and archaeologists to catalogue and locate the nearby archaeological objects and listed buildings within an area of interest, such as in this case Quainton Parish, along with the period to which they relate.
The Heritage listing of objects adopts the National Grid Referencing (NGR)scheme to locate historical objects. Popular GIS Mapping plugins adopt Latitude and Longtitude. Websites such as gridreferencefinder.com will support conversion between these schemes, as can be seen in the screen grab.
Using these coordinates, a marker representing an historic object, can be mapped onto a Geographical Information System (GIS), such as the plugin Mapmarker Pro. This Marker is for a watermill within the parish which along with 6 windmills are located on the parish map below, along with their heritage listing details.
